![]() Only 5km south of Opatija, Lovran is a luscious town and resort on the eastern coast of the Istrian peninsula. Like Opatija, Lovran has a mild climate, protected by the Ucka mountains, and a rich architectural heritage. In addition to several Baroque houses on the town square and a medieval tower, the 14th-century church of St George has a spectacular series of wall paintings. Although slightly less famous than Opatija, Lovran is equally lush with flowering gardens and plenty of greenery. Named for the laurel (lovor) trees that are abundant everywhere, Lovran is also known for the cherries and chestnuts that grow in its hinterlands. The Lungomare promenade is a lovely seaside walk that connects Lovran with Opatija and other points on the "Liburnian riviera". Lovran makes a lovely destination in its own right or you can use it as base to explore other Istrian destinations such as Labin, Rabac and Pula. Other day trips from Lovran include Opatija, Rijeka and Cres Island. Getting to LovranThere are no direct boat or ferry connections to Lovran, but it's an easy drive from Opatija. Local buses connect Lovran to Opatija and Rijeka and there are frequent intercity buses to Pula, Rovinj and Porec where there are ferries to Italy.
