On the Kvarner coast, with Krk Island just across a narrow strip of sea, Crikvenica is ideally located for a total resort experience. Wellness has been the watchword of Crikvenica ever since 1890 when the first spa-hotel was built to accommodate vacationing Austrians. That hotel is now the majestic Hotel Therapia, which is still one of the finest wellness centres on the coast. Crikvenica's reputation for healing energy inspired the construction of many other hotels over the years in a Crikvenica Riviera that stretches from Jadranovo in the north to Selce in the south. A shoreside promenade connects the coastal towns. Seniors are regular guests of the Thalassotherapy centre but there are plenty of public beaches for kids to romp around. Beaches are gravelly though! With its bevy of shops, cafes, hotels and restaurants, Crikvenica is not a place to commune with nature. Just a short distance northeast of town however, the forested hills rise over the sea which makes a nice outing for hikers.
