It's helpful to have a car in Split but not necessary as Split is well connected by bus with other coastal destinations. Although ferries to the islands radiate out from Split, the ferry schedules and distances make it impractical to use Split as a base for visitng the islands of Hvar, Korcula and Vis.

Here are some ideas for day trips from Split:

Brac Island
It's the largest island closest to Split. A number of daily ferries connect Split with Supetar and passenger boats go to Bol. It makes a relaxing change from bustling Split.

Brela Beach
It might be Croatia's most beautiful beach and is less than an hour by bus.

Baska Voda
This is another pretty port and beach scenically settled at the foot of mountains.

Makarska
Makarska is a smaller and cuter version of Split with a nice harbourside promenade. Split locals go there on Sunday for a stroll.

Solin
Ramble amid the Roman ruins of this once formidable city that is easily reachable by Split public buses.

Kastela
This scenic series of coastal villages arose around 15th and 16th-century castles. Enjoy the small-town atmosphere, the castles and the beaches.

Solta
Beat a quick retreat from busy Split by taking a ferry to this nearby island.

Trogir
This architectural gem has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Omis--You'll know it when you see it. The rocks will be towering over you next to the Cetina river.
