International Ferries to Split

Split's only international ferry connection is to Italy. Ferries from Italy to Split run all year and are highly reliable. Only a very strong Adriatic storm causes the cancellation of a ferry and that is most likely to occur in winter.

The cross-Adriatic ferries embark from either Ancona or Pescara. The car ferries from Ancona to Split run all year while the Pescara ferries are summer only.

Only a few companies run the ferry routes and the prices and amenities are roughly the same. It's best to choose based upon the schedule.

Local Ferries

Split is the main embarkation point for dozens of ferries to the Dalmatian islands, including Hvar, Brac, Vis and Korcula. Most ferries are car ferries run by Jadrolinija but there's also a catamaran, the "Krilo", that has a regular run from Split to Hvar and Korcula all year. It's fast and convenient.

Reserving Local Ferries

It's important to note that local ferries to Split may not be reserved online. To reserve a place on a local car or passenger ferry, you must buy directly from a local Jadrolinija or travel agency. (get a list of booking agencies) In the height of the summer season, it's wise to buy tickets on car ferries to the most popular islands as soon as possible. Passengers can always get on board but space for cars can fill up! See more about booking ferries in Croatia.

The Coastal Ferry

Another scenic way of arriving in Split is to take the coastal car ferry that runs twice a week from Rijeka to Split, Hvar, Korcula, Mljet and Dubrovnik. The coastal ferry is large and comfortable but prices are higher than for the local ferries. You can reserve the coastal car ferry online. See the coastal car ferry schedule.
