I have to admit to a prejudice in favour of the Hotel Grand Villa Argentina. I stayed there on my first trip to Dubrovnik in 1996, less than a year after hostilities ended. Even though Dubrovnik had been peaceful for four years, tourists still treated it as a war zone. Despite their apprehension for the future, the staff of the Hotel Argentina were kind and attentive, eager to fill me in on Dubrovnik's history and their feelings about the recent war. The Argentina Hotel was a base for journalists covering the 1991 bombardment largely because the terrace affords a superb view of Old Dubrovnik.It remains the hotel of choice for the international press. I've stayed there several times since 1996 and have watched with almost parental pride as the hotel blossomed into a first-class luxury establishment. In 2002 it received a total makeover and soon received its five stars.

The villa-hotel complex includes 159 rooms and seven deluxe suites divided between five distinct structures, providing a quiet, intimate experience. Most rooms have relaxing views of the sea and Dubrovnik's Old Town.

The furnishings are plush and the rooms have every comfort you can think of (and some you haven't thought of). Bathrobes, modems, safes and 24-hour room service are standard features. In addition, there are

at your disposal. The hotel is only a short walk from the old town (in the Ploce neighbourhood) and right on the sea for excellent swimming.

Perhaps it is the view from the terrace that makes the Argentina so special. At the end of the day, you can relax on the terrace, sipping a cocktail and watching the sunset cast a fiery glow over Dubrovnik's rooftops as it sinks into the Adriatic. You won't soon forget the experience.
