Restaurant Menego
Restaurant Menego
Hvar is significantly more expensive than other Croatian islands and the restaurants are no exception. Nevertheless the quality is high. Remember that fish and seafood are the priciest main courses. Light appetites can get away with a hearty starter of pasta or risotto. Many restaurants are closed on Sunday. For more information on tips, dress etc. see Croatian dining customs. Unless stated otherwise, the restaurants below are in Hvar Town.

Hanibal
Elegant Hanibal has a good selection of pasta cooked with shrimp; lobster, fish or mushrooms and an amazing brodetto of fish stewed with polenta.

Bounty
This is the simplest of options but sometimes you just want a simple meal. It's unexciting food but easy on the budget.

Manego
On a steep street above the Church, this is a wonderful choice. Marinated meats, cheeses and vegetables are prepared the old-fashioned Dalmatian way and the menu is rounded out by aromatic fisherman's platters.

Macondo
In a narrow alley over Hvar's main square this place turns out wonderful fish dishes. Their specialty is a peasant stew called gregada which includes sea bass, potatoes, onions and wine simmered to perfection.

Yaksa
Hvar's most romantic dining spot, the rock-walled garden of Yaksa is a favourite of the trendy yachting crowd. But don't worry, the food is prepared with a minimum of fuss using the freshest local ingredients.

Paradise Garden
The first time I tried the spaghetti with seafood here many years ago, I thought I had passed through the heavenly gates. It's still good, serving up expertly-grilled fish in addition to the pasta choices.

Konoba Humac
It's a little hard to find but once you stumble on this place (10km from Jelsa on the road to Sucuraj), you won't forget it. This is the very definition of local cooking as all is prepared without the benefit of electricity. Who needs electricity when the specialty is slow-stewed meat prepared the traditional way--under a bell. It's wise to call first and order the food before heading out.
